Bridging the Gap! - Building Challenge #4

Students learned about tension and compression today. Using their desks and chairs, students had to build a bridge spanning a 30cm gap. Their bridges needed to hold a load - all groups were successful!

Clay Animals - Building Challenge #1

Peek At Our Weeks

Language Arts The class has just finished writing an instructional paragraph explaining how to wrap a present. Now hopefully you’ll get some help with your Christmas wrapping this year ;) As we finish up our Christmas book study, students are practicing the art of writing well written sentences to answer questions and learning that speaking rules are much different than writing rules.

ScienceThe grade three students participated in hands-on science experiments in the first part of our new Building and Testing Designs unit.  Using supplies, you graciously donated, students have been crushing their building challenges. Be sure to chat with your child about their experience! J

Math – Currently we are exploring number sense further in preparation for the operations of addition and subtraction using 2 & 3–digit numbers.  It is important to take our time learning the next two units as many students are developing their personal strategies for problem solving and re-grouping numbers.

Social Studies – The class has been enthusiastically learning about the geography of our planet. Your child is exploring different ways to read and interpret maps. Students have explored using a globe and compared globes to maps. Before the unit ends students will create their own map!

Health – We have just begun the study of relationships and how healthy friendships and family life contribute to our wellbeing and quality of life.  Students are enjoying the new program!

Scarecrow Paragraphs and Portraits

Our scarecrow portraits and paragraphs have been up on our bulletin board since Halloween.  Students have worked hard to write paragraphs describing their scarecrow.  We hope you drop by to play our game - read a paragraph and guess which scarecrow it is describing.

Science TEST - November 10th

Hello,

There is some confusion in the class about what to study.  A review of the information that will be covered on the test tomorrow was sent home with your child Tuesday, November 8th.  Please help your child study their review tonight - they have practiced studying in the class today with their friends but more studying is needed.

Good Luck!

Peek At Our Weeks - November

Language Arts Our scarecrow portraits are now finished! We will be working hard in the next week to describe our scarecrows in writing – developing the skill of describing story critical characters in our writing will help students show readers what they are thinking through writing. Near the end of this month we will write our first story using the writing techniques we’ve been studying thus far. We can’t wait to share our writing with you!
Math – Currently we are looking at how to represent numbers in different ways.  We are also extending our knowledge of increasing & decreasing patterns to look at 3 & 4 –digit numbers and the patterns our number system has. We will be moving from this into addition later this month.
Social Studies – The students have been really engaged in our discussions and study of quality of life in Canada and the four countries we are studying this year (Peru, Ukraine, Tunisia & India). As Remembrance Day approaches students will also be applying what they’ve learned to quantify the sacrifices our troops have made in order to make our country safe.
Science – We are very lucky! As we wrap up our Rocks & Minerals unit we have been able to complete many experiments as well as make our own crystals! The test for this unit will be Thurs., Nov. 10th (A study guide and handout with tips about preparing for tests sent home Tues.)

The Great Soccer Debacle of 2016

Hello Parents,

Unfortunately due to the nature of recess and team play at school recently I have banned team soccer at recesses (snack and lunch).  There has been fighting, arguing, bossiness and tears from the boys in grades 3 & 4.

If your child wishes to play team soccer they will have to be enrolled in team sports outside of school.

Thank you for your understanding and support in this matter,

Grade 3B

October - Peek At Our Weeks

Language Arts – Currently our class is learning about the different genres of books found in our classroom and school libraries. The class is ready to begin the writing process, starting with a project which focuses on elaborative detail. We look forward to sharing our work with you.

Science – Exploring Rocks and Minerals has been exciting for the students so far! We are now learning about the rock cycle and the three major types of rocks.

Birthday Treats and Allergies

                     Birthday Celebrations!

If you would like to send in a birthday treat for the class on your child’s birthday you are welcome to do so.

However, please keep in mind that we have students with severe peanut, dairy and egg allergies in our classroom.  If you could please send in a healthy treat instead of sweets this would ensure all the students can enjoy a safe and healthy treat with your child. Thank you for your sensitivity.
