Everybody Needs A Rock!
Our class is going to be presenting again!
Each student has been asked to bring in a rock that is special to them. Rocks are to be at school on Friday, September 26th. After listening to Byrd Baylor's book Everybody Needs a Rock! we discovered some very good rules for rock hunting :)
1. Find your rock outside
2. Make sure it is quiet when you go rock hunting (it's not good to
go rock hunting when you're mad, sad or worried).
3. It is always a good idea to dig for a rock
4. It should fit in your hand (don't choose a rock that is too big or
one that is tiny)
5. It should fit in your pocket
6. You should smell it (geologist will often smell and even lick
rocks they find to quickly categorize them! Of course they use
more scientific tests to be sure of a rock's origin and type later
on.)
7. Choose a rock that is the colour you like (washing a rock can
reveal colours you couldn't see when it was dry!)
8. Choose a rock that is shaped in a way you like
9. Make up your own mind - this is your special rock you decide if
it is perfect :)
10. Have fun!

Light of Christ - Community Values Mural
Many of the classes at Light of Christ contributed to a mural on the school tarmac. Our class had an opportunity to go out and participate!
The class has been discussing values in different cultures and communities around the globe, as well as their own. The students got to show their learning as they drew pictures that expressed what our school community values.
I saw students excitedly drawing crosses, doves and friends. Some also used words to write down the values L.O.C. stands for. Words such as faith, happiness and family were being written down in a fury.
The students had such a great time! Who knew chalk art could be so fun?

Making models - Earth's layers
Last week the students were learning about the different layers of rocks and minerals that make up the planet Earth.
Each student made their own model to help them remember
each of the layers.
We began by rolling one ball of grey clay. It represented the solid metal of the Earth's core.
Next we flattened out a piece of red clay and wrapped it around our grey "inner core". The red was representative of liquid metal called the "outer core"
Afterwards we grabbed yellow and flattened that as well! Once the kids had their yellow as flat and as wide as a small pancake we covered our red "outer core" with it. The yellow became the mantel - liquid rock!
Finally the students mixed blue & green and made the outside of their models look similar to the Earth's surface - Crust.
The crust is actually the layers found beneath the bedrock. Inside the crust there are may layers as well. These layers (Sedimentary, Metamorphic & Igneous) are going to be the focus or our Rocks and Minerals unit!

Reminder
Please help your child study their spelling words this weekend. Our first spelling quiz will be held on Monday September 15, 2014.
Your child's spelling duo-tang will be sent home today. Inside you will find activities we have done this week with the spelling words. Please finish any incomplete portions and review the activities with your child. PLEASE return the duo-tang on Monday September 15th.
A great way to make spelling a fun family activity is to toss a ball back and forth with your child as they spell the words. Also have your child use their spelling word in a sentence to ensure they understand its meaning.
